I love all the colors of the rainbow and take every opportunity to use lots of them. Originally, I wanted to create a different picture using acrylic on canvas, but it did not turn out the way I dreamed of. After a bit of trial and error, patience, and determination, I created A Fish Out of Water with liquid paint, straws and brushes. Hello, my name is Alex Lynn and I drew Modern Italian. I wanted to challenge myself with shading because I have been deliberately ignoring it for a long time. I knew I was taking a risk with shading but I wanted to improve. I used 2B, 4B, and 6B pencil grades to achieve the dark contrasts that make light shades pop out. I faced many problems such as having trouble with proportions for the pedestal. I hope you consider my art in the final vote and that you were inspired by my image.

I was inspired to paint the desert during one of my watercolor classes in Outschool. I liked the subject because, even in the rough & rocky terrain you can find something beautiful. I like cactuses because they can survive through the toughest weather and still make it. It’s important to remember that even if you get discouraged - you are the cactus…you can survive anything! I don’t actually live where cactuses grow, so imagining them was my challenge.

I wanted to give my piece a more eerie or melancholic vibe which is why I used darker colors for it.
