The first 30 days are the make-or-break window. Educators who land their first section within a month and generate their first review are dramatically more likely to still be teaching six months later. Educators who let momentum stall in weeks 3–4 often don't return.
This roadmap keeps you moving. It's a week-by-week structure — not a strict script, but a rhythm.
Week 1: Setup and orientation
Your goal this week is to get oriented and start shaping your first class.
- Complete your educator profile. Photo, bio, credentials, teaching style. Families read this. See Use your profile to market your classes.
- Register for the next Welcome to Outschool webinar. It runs the first Monday of every month and is designed specifically for new educators. Find it on the events calendar.
- Read the 2026 Educator Kickoff Webinar Recap. Covers Educator Pathways (you're in the Foundations pathway), the Mentor Cohort, and the community.
- Join our Slack community. The fastest way to ask questions and see how other new educators are navigating this stage.
- Watch for the EDge Newsletter. It lands in your inbox every two weeks with product updates, upcoming events, and the latest guidance. Save it and skim it — a lot of what changes on the platform gets announced here first.
- Skim the Trending Now and Topic Requests dashboards. Look for gaps between what families are searching for and what's available in your subject.
- Draft your first class concept. Topic, format, age range, duration, price. Don't perfect it yet — get a first pass on paper.
End-of-week milestone: Profile complete. Welcome to Outschool webinar registered. First class concept drafted.
Week 2: Build and submit your first listing
Your goal this week is to move from concept to submitted listing.
End-of-week milestone: Listing submitted.
Week 3: Prepare and promote
Your class is approved (or in review). This week you set up for a great first class and start building demand.
- Schedule your first section. Look at Supply in Demand for slots with unmet demand. Give yourself 7–14 days of lead time.
- Prepare your classroom. Zoom setup, materials, slides. Do a solo walkthrough. See How to use Zoom: A getting started guide.
- Announce your class outside Outschool. Share the link in relevant homeschool Facebook groups (follow group rules), post to your personal social channels with a specific hook, and reach out one-to-one to your existing network.
- Consider a launch discount. A 25–50% off coupon for your first section brings in early bookers whose reviews unlock everything downstream. See 5 easy steps for using coupons to promote your classes.
End-of-week milestone: First section scheduled with at least one enrollment.
Week 4: Run and iterate
The main event.
- Run your first class. Check equipment 30 minutes early. Warm intro. Start on time. End 2–3 minutes early.
- Follow up with families. Thank-you message, ask for a review, share what's next.
- Schedule your next section right away. Same class, different time slot. Momentum is everything.
- Check your dashboard. Educator insights dashboard shows impressions, click-through, enrollment rate. Look for patterns.
- Iterate. Small changes to your title, image, or description based on what week 3–4 data shows.
End-of-week milestone: First class taught. First review requested. Next section scheduled.
The 30-day scoreboard
By day 30, aim for:
- ✅ Profile complete
- ✅ At least one class listed and approved
- ✅ At least one section scheduled and run
- ✅ First review requested (ideally received)
- ✅ Second section scheduled
If you hit those five, you're set up well. If any are missing, that's fine — figure out which one and focus there. Don't try to catch up on all of them at once.
When to reach out for help
- Stuck on your listing? Book a Mentor office hour — mentors will review live and give feedback.
- New to Outschool and want a live walkthrough? Register for the next Welcome to Outschool webinar — first Monday of every month, built for educators in exactly this stage.
- Class isn't getting impressions? Post in the Slack community — someone will spot the issue quickly.
- Want to stay current on platform changes? Read the EDge Newsletter each time it lands (every two weeks) — product updates, feature releases, and events are announced there first.
- Platform question (payments, verification, tech)? Help Center or Contact Support.
- Not sure which pathway you're in or what programming applies to you? Educator Pathways FAQ.
After day 30
Your next milestone is Get Your First 10 Enrollments. Once you clear ten, you're no longer in the "figure it out" stage of the Foundations pathway — you're moving toward Momentum, where the work shifts from launching to scaling what's working.
You're not alone in this. The Outschool community is built around the reality that starting is the hardest part.
